Dimethylethylamine/DMEA : Description and use

Description

Dimethylaminoethanol, deanol (DMAE), or chemically speaking, 2-(dimethylamino)ethanol, is a natural substance similar to choline.
DMEA facilitates the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain and also stimulates the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine. We find it in fish. It has nootropic effects, and, contrary to choline itself, immediately crosses the blood-brain barrier. It is assumed that DMEA is methylated to choline in the brain. It is transformed into choline by the liver but the choline molecule is too large to easily pass through the blood-brain barrier.
Given its extensive media coverage, many cosmetic companies offer DMEA-based products at premium prices. Yet, it is a simple substance that is no more expensive than AHAs or aspirin, and does not require any specific stabilisation, like vitamin C for example, and it is easy to incorporate into an excipient.
At ambient temperature it is a volatile liquid.

USE
  • Cross-linking agent for synthetic resins (phenolic resins, polyurethanes), mainly used in the cold-box core-making process in foundry.
  • Polymerisation catalyst for polyamides.
