Perchloroethylene : Description and use
Perchloroethylene or tetrachloroethylene is a solvent, which is sometimes simply called "perchlo". It was first synthesised in 1821 by Michael Faraday, by heating hexachloroethane until it decomposed into perchloroethylene and dichlorine (Cl₂). This Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) is mainly used for dry cleaning fabrics and for degreasing metals. It is on the IARC's list of group 2A carcinogens and may cause neurological, kidney and hepatic disorders.
It is a colourless liquid with a characteristic odour.
Flammability: Perchloroethylene is not flammable.
- To dry clean clothes
- To degrease and clean metal parts
- As a finishing product for textiles
- To extract oils and fats
- As an intermediate in synthesis
