Ethylene : Description and use
The simplest alkene, ethylene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon. It can also be called R1150.
It is a colourless and volatile gas with a sweet odour. Its density is close to that of air with which it forms explosive mixtures. At over 425°C, it catches fire and burns with a clear flame. Heat generated by combustion: 47,200kJ/kg.
Flammability: Ethylene is a highly flammable gas.
Explosiveness: This product can form explosive mixtures with air.
- Synthesising several polymers and plastic materials
- Accelerating the ripening of fruit
- Regulating the growth of plants
- Welding and cutting metals
- As a refrigerant
